This week, The Desert Gypsy's store manager, JoAnne, was in Mexico helping me find pieces to put in the store. It's such a joy to have a like-minded person helping me with what I call, "la busqueda" or the search. This little roadtrip outside of Guadalajara took us to the village of San Juan Evangelista on the shores of Lake Cajititlan in search of "Barro Bruñido" or burnished clay. We first met Joaquin at an artshow in Tlaquepaque and immediately knew we would have a lasting relationship with this talented artisan. After that first meeting, each trip we would take to Patzcuaro always included a visit to see Joaquin. He specializes in hand-carved wooden crosses and other objects such as retablos, frames, and hearts. His "taller" or workshop, on the outskirts of Patzcuaro, is a busy place where his son, daughter, and other family members help to create his unique pieces.
